We received a copy of the Anorak magazine to review.
Upon opening the magazine, I couldn't help but giggle at the following in the editorial: 'They are mysterious, mythical beings that have filled our imaginations for millennia. Sometimes they are heroes. Other times they are mean and terrifying. What are these fearsome creatures? Politicians? No, DRAGONS of course?' - you thought politicians too right?!
The first piece in the magazine is all about having fun. Some good old fun, the kind of fun people had before iPads, phones and PS4s. The piece is full of excellent ideas, such as sailing the world (use the sofa in your lounge as a boat), a game of spot - choose a letter and write down everything you spot with that letter in the house. It's great to see two pages dedicated to get those imaginations jogging - from jumping to flying.
'Nature is Fun' has been an absolute eye opener for me! Little person was surprised to find that I was not aware clownfish could change colour to camouflage and how bees cooled their hives....I can cofidentally add that I'm pretty sure you too haven't heard of Hoatzn....a burping bird! This piece is full of so many fun facts, I won't add any more spoilers by listing them all here!
The magazine beautifully flows from article to article; and next is an easy to follow cooking recipe for potato boats. Little person will be making these very soon, and he is thrilled about it. The recipe appears in his magazine, which he has kindly told me means that he will be in charge in the kitchen for this - watch out Masterchef!
Little person enjoys anything and everything about animals, and facts that he did not know previously are a huge hit with him. So, it was no surprise that he was going to enjoy reading 'They eat what?'. Facts such as these: ants (leaf cutter) that spit and poo on their food (not making this up as I go along), or red squirrels not hibernating in winter, or how butterflies in the Amazon get some of their salt from turtle and crocodile tears, have been fascinating (little person's stated his mind has been blown!).
'Now that's silly' is full of expressions we use in everyday life that don't really make sense. One of the saying listed made little person giggle endlessly as I tend to say it a lot, and that being 'it cost an arm and a leg'!
We swiftly move through jokes section, a lovely story called 'When O met O', and move onto a list of some festivals celebrated worldwide. Festivals talked about are 'Castleton Garland Day', 'Entroido De Lava', 'Piao Se' and 'Vevcani carnival'. Great description of each festival with lovely illustrations take the mind on an exciting adventure.
Next stop on our adventure through the magazine is 'Snail Ville', this is a refreshing well written piece of writing- a short story with a lot to think about. Little person raised some interesting points (and what he'd do as mayor). It was a great introduction to our discussion about fair/equality. The story (about a competition between slugs and snails) allowed little person to explore so many different ideas surrounding equality and fairness.
The cover of the magazine is a beautiful dragon, and the inside is as beautifully illustrated. With the cover introducing dragons, the magazine follows that through with some exceptional pieces about dragons, one 'Dragons of the Past' gives a great insight into dragons, and the next piece 'Dragons of the Present' - I won't say anything more for this, except yes, they are everywhere!
Anorak magazine is full of fun hands on activates too. From drawing your own dragon, to making your own 3D dragon, lots of colouring, word search, number problems, word problems, mazes and much much more.
We have thoroughly enjoyed Anorak magazine, and little person is certain you will too.
In summary, Anorak magazine is a high quality magazine, bursting with facts, full of fun and an all round enjoyable magazine!
