I’ve always enjoyed Orchard toys, and always keep my eyes peeled for any other games that might work well for either child.
‘The Game of Ladybirds’ was a buy more so for youngest child. Recently she has shown an interest in taking part with the schooling and so I thought it was time she got to try her hands at some educational games.
The game is simple to play, and the aim is to help build confidence when it comes to counting. The game comes with 24 ladybird cards, 1 dice shaker, 1 dice and instructions.
So how does it work?
Layout and instructions are very simple, but that’s important as the game is aimed at 3-5 year olds. The ladybird cards are doubled sided cards, one side is plain red with white spots (various number of dots, from 1 to 6), the other side has a leaf with ladybirds (all have a different number of ladybirds).
The cards are placed with the spots side up, the youngest player goes first, simply using the dice and dice shaker to roll the dice. The player checks the number the dice lands on and picks a card with corresponding spots. That card is the players to keep, and is placed ladybirds facing up. Once play ends, each player counts the total number of ladybirds they have, and the one with the most wins the game.
What we think?
The game is aimed at 3-5 year olds, to help with counting, building confidence with both counting and matching. Even though it is a very basic game, both children have enjoyed playing it, it doesn’t last too long, so children don’t reach a ‘bored’ stage.
The game pieces, as with all Orchard toys, are of a very high quality. With all of the Orchard toys games we have owned over the last few years, the games still look as good as new, and that is simply because of the quality of the product.
The Game of Ladybirds has really helped encourage 3 year old with counting and matching. It has definitely enabled her to feel more confident with both areas. Learning happens through play, and this game has definitely covered that very well. Through our play 3 year old had laughed and learnt, giggles and educational session all in one!
I would highly recommend this as well as other Orchard toy games (others I have reviewed are Money match cafe).
