See Inside Your Body

I believe all children are fascinated by the wold of science, and even more so when it comes to biology and our bodies. We've been using workbook style resources and have found them to be good, but when I came across An Usborne Flap book - 'See Inside your Body' I knew it was going to be a great buy.

This book offers a more exciting walk through the body, with delightfully colourful illustrations and over 50 flaps to lift. It sounds like a younger children's book, with the flaps, however the detail shows otherwise.

Topics covered

The book contains the following chapters:

  1. Your amazing body
  2. Eating and exercising
  3. Breathing air
  4. Pumping air
  5. Bones and Muscles
  6. Brain Power
  7. The Senses
  8. Drinking and Weeing
  9. Body Works
How much detail

Just looking at some of the topics, and you will be amazed with how much detail this book has, and how in depth the topics are covered (for children). For instance, 'Breathing and air', which is pretty much covering the area of lungs. I was pleasantly surprised to find not only does it explain breathing, but the book uses the terms alveoli, Bronchiole, diaphragm, mucus and so on.
Some of these terms come up a little later in science, but introducing them in this book means children already have that basic knowledge, hopefully making learning at a later  date much easier. It's great to see the concept behind asthma and smoking covered in the book, it helps build that understanding of what and why.

Moving onto another topic, 'Pumping Blood', and again I'm pleased to see terms such as valves, capillary, artery, vein and more being used. Whilst explaining inn detail the mechanisms of the heart, the correct terms are used, already laying the foundations for knowledge building.

For my own curiosity, I had to have a quick look through the book before we officially started using it, I was curious to see whether neurons were presented as just that or more detail was added...amazingly the book does introduce dendrites and axons!

With so much detail covering each topic, in detail labels this book will be used for many years to come. originally, I assumed it was a simple flap book, overviewing ideas and concepts. However I have been pleasantly surprised. It has also helped jog my memory! The colourful illustrations, the fun flaps are a great addition to making this a more fun book, unlike the usual black and white texts!

The last chapter, 'Body Works' is almost like a quick test, listing things like alveoli, cochlea, iris, metacarpal, neurons, platelets, tendon and villi and asking the reader to find them in the book. It's a great revision exercise and a good help to try and remember all those new terms.

There is also a weblink for more information!

What do we think?

The book is hardback with card pages, sturdy flaps and large enough to not have to squint. The pages are full of bright illustrations, in detail labels, facts (such as, in one day your blood travels an unbelievable 19,000km) and a detail explanation how things work (such as heart or hearing).

I am thoroughly pleased with this buy, not only will working through this book be more fun, but I know little person will indubitably learn a lot!

I would highly recommend, we purchased ours from amazon, for purchasing info click here.

Yipee adventure box - bug hunting theme

Yippee adventure box - bug hunting theme box  We  received  the marvellous Yippee  adventure box to trial, and after having enjoyed the  activities  with both 7 and 3 year old,  I  felt a review was worthwhile.  Yippee boxes are  designed  to encourage science,  technology, engineering, art and maths (STEAM), and 'To  facilitate fun and special family  experiences.' Upon opening the 'Bug box' both kids were  overwhelmed   with  the contents and eagerly dived in, so off we were, on our yippee  adventure! What's in the box? The bug box arrived with two categories of activities, 'Bug homes' and 'Go on a bug adventure'.  Bug homes Bug homes activities  were all about that, making, creating and designing homes for  little  creatures. The  first  activity little person dived into was, making his  spider web and spider. The activities can be easily carried out by children, except using the scissors..

Fusha House arabic

I was kindly offered the opportunity to complete a free session using FushaHouse arabic. Arabic has been a language that I've always wanted to learn, and it's also a language I've been passionate about. As little person has taken to writing and reading in English, Arabic was the second language I wanted him to learn. When learning a language, it is important to find resources that are easy to use, especially for younger learners. Over time I have tried so many books, apps and websites, but if the resource isn't exciting or encapsulating, young leaners loose interest very quickly. There is nothing worse than spending so much money and zero use. Nevertheless, I believe we have found a resource that ticks all the boxes. FushaHouse offers interactive learning, it is also child user friendly and the pace enables children to feel at ease, without feeling overwhelmed very quickly into the process. A lot of language resources seem to very quickly move on from basics to

Endangered animals activity pack

We recently received this wonderful fact filled pack from Archiboldclutterbuck (to read more about Archiboldclutterbuck  resources click here). Contents and what we think The pack is made up of an activity booklet and a poster. The poster is a great visual tool; with in depth (but not overbearing-too much to read) information about 6 critically endangered animals across the globe. Each animal is listed with a fact file (for instance type of animal, habitat etc), and reason as to why they are critically endangered. For each animal listed there is a beautiful photograph; I do believe having photography in such posters and texts is important , as it really does bring the whole concept and idea to 'life'. We love the poster as it's a great size, vibrant and easy to understand, with all the vital information but without too much to read, making it a perfect poster!  The activity pack is what you would ideally expect when teaching endangered animals. Learning fo
