Dekko Comics

Dekko comics

I wanted to share another superb resource we've been using more recently - Dekko comics.

As a family that are structured during some months, semi structured during others and completely autonomous for some, Dekko comics have been a brilliant resource to have and use.

I saw these fab comics, and decided to order all 12 back issues, I knew they would be invaluable (so why waste time buying one at a time?!)

What makes them so good?

Each issue covers a variety of subjects, with in-depth explanations to foreign language scripts. The layout is fun and exciting, a colourful comic, but full of facts. These comics work so well, because children enjoy the idea of 'relaxing and reading a comic for fun', but at the same pick up information - without being bored and tied down to a desk!

Little person has enjoyed reading through issue number 1. Issue number 1 covers the following;

Maths
  • time
  • fractions, decimals and percentages
  • measurement
English

  • Spelling
  • nouns, adjectives and verbs
  • figures of speech
Language

  • French - days of the week
  • Basic German greetings
Biology

  • Sinuses and colds
Physics

  • How force works
History

  • how to use historical sources
  • The WW2 home front
The comic has 32 pages full of all of the above. Once little person has read through one issue, I feel like we've covered a full day of school work.

It may sound like a comic with a few illustrations and lengthy (boring) writing, however, I can assure you that is not how this comic works! For instance, 'Spelling spells' is an excellent piece of writing helping show the common rules in English language, with a funny twist (magic spells). Little person has happily repeated (again and again) 'I before e, except after c'. The comic strip goes through much more detail with other rules (e.g. happy = happiest, write. = writing and so on). The fact that it took little person about 10 minutes to read the article and happily remember the rules is a huge win win!
sneak peak inside issue 1

It just so happens that I've recently had issues with sinuses and a cold, so it was wonderful to see little person explain what was happening and why after reading  'sinuses under siege'.
Colourful, full of humour and facts!

Currently, we have been studying fractions, decimals and percentages. Basil and Earnie have enabled little person to revisit and revise all that he has learnt, it was great to see him refresh his memory and giggle at the same time! I know we will start talking about our pizzas and drinks in fractions, decimals and percentages for a while now! The comic strip neatly and swiftly covers the main facts, doesn't verge onto becoming a boring and cumbersome read, and with the added humour (there's always one that eats all the pizza) it continues to offer the lighthearted learning that works so well.

It is great to see that each comic strip is full of honour, facts and fantastic illustrations.

We purchased all 12 back issues, and as much as I would love to write about each and every comic strip in all of these comics, I think I shall leave an element of surprise for you!

Issue one covers the topics listed above, but other subjects that are included in other issues include Chemistry, PSHE and geography.

If you do manage to get your hands on a copy, don't forget to let us know what you think!

Yipee adventure box - bug hunting theme

Yippee adventure box - bug hunting theme box  We  received  the marvellous Yippee  adventure box to trial, and after having enjoyed the  activities  with both 7 and 3 year old,  I  felt a review was worthwhile.  Yippee boxes are  designed  to encourage science,  technology, engineering, art and maths (STEAM), and 'To  facilitate fun and special family  experiences.' Upon opening the 'Bug box' both kids were  overwhelmed   with  the contents and eagerly dived in, so off we were, on our yippee  adventure! What's in the box? The bug box arrived with two categories of activities, 'Bug homes' and 'Go on a bug adventure'.  Bug homes Bug homes activities  were all about that, making, creating and designing homes for  little  creatures. The  first  activity little person dived into was, making his  spider web and spider. The activities can be easily carried out by children, except using the scissors..

Fusha House arabic

I was kindly offered the opportunity to complete a free session using FushaHouse arabic. Arabic has been a language that I've always wanted to learn, and it's also a language I've been passionate about. As little person has taken to writing and reading in English, Arabic was the second language I wanted him to learn. When learning a language, it is important to find resources that are easy to use, especially for younger learners. Over time I have tried so many books, apps and websites, but if the resource isn't exciting or encapsulating, young leaners loose interest very quickly. There is nothing worse than spending so much money and zero use. Nevertheless, I believe we have found a resource that ticks all the boxes. FushaHouse offers interactive learning, it is also child user friendly and the pace enables children to feel at ease, without feeling overwhelmed very quickly into the process. A lot of language resources seem to very quickly move on from basics to

Endangered animals activity pack

We recently received this wonderful fact filled pack from Archiboldclutterbuck (to read more about Archiboldclutterbuck  resources click here). Contents and what we think The pack is made up of an activity booklet and a poster. The poster is a great visual tool; with in depth (but not overbearing-too much to read) information about 6 critically endangered animals across the globe. Each animal is listed with a fact file (for instance type of animal, habitat etc), and reason as to why they are critically endangered. For each animal listed there is a beautiful photograph; I do believe having photography in such posters and texts is important , as it really does bring the whole concept and idea to 'life'. We love the poster as it's a great size, vibrant and easy to understand, with all the vital information but without too much to read, making it a perfect poster!  The activity pack is what you would ideally expect when teaching endangered animals. Learning fo
